Viviane Reding is the EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media. Born in Luxembourg in 1951, Mrs. Reding has a long and distinguished career in European politics and has been instrumental in the creation of influential EU policy in the regulation and standardisation of digital communications generally, including the audiovisual sector. She has been a European Commissioner since 1999 and, before that, she served for ten years as a Member of the European Parliament.

Commissioner Reding has been the recipient of a number of international honours and awards including, most recently, being made an Officer of the National Order of the French Legion of Honour and being awarded the "Gloria Artis" Medal of Honour from Poland. She holds a Doctorate in Human Sciences from the Sorbonne in Paris.
